Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of the Senegal national team, taking over the Teranga Lions for his first role in international management.
The 50-year-old former France international replaces Pape Thiaw and arrives with extensive experience both as a player and as a manager. Vieira began his football career at Cannes before moving to AC Milan in 1995. He later joined Arsenal in 1996, where he became one of the club’s most influential midfielders .
During his time at Arsenal, Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups. He later played for Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City, winning further Serie A titles with Inter and an FA Cup .
Vieira also represented France 107 times and scored six goals. He was part of the France squad that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000, while also helping the team reach the 2006 World Cup final.
Vieira finished his playing career with an impressive collection of major honours, including a World Cup, European Championship, five Italian league titles and three Premier League titles.
However, his manegerial career has been less decorated. Vieira has coached New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa after beginning his coaching journey with Manchester City’s academy. He later on took over Genoa football club and left in 2025.
Vieira now faces a new challenge with Senegal, who will look to his experience and leadership as they prepare for the next phase of their international campaign.
