Consumer goods manufacturer Unilever Kenya has invested Ksh70 million in a solar power project at its Nairobi factory as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable manufacturing.
The company said the new solar installation will help lower reliance on grid electricity while supporting its commitment to environmental sustainability. The project is expected to generate clean energy for factory operations and contribute to the company’s global climate goals.
Speaking during the launch, company officials noted that the investment reflects Unilever’s commitment to adopting renewable energy solutions and improving operational efficiency. They added that the initiative will help reduce energy costs and strengthen the firm’s environmental performance over the long term.
The investment comes as more companies in Kenya embrace green energy technologies in response to rising energy costs and growing concerns about climate change. Solar power has increasingly become a preferred source of renewable energy for manufacturers seeking to reduce their carbon footprint.
Industry stakeholders welcomed the move, saying it demonstrates how private sector investments in clean energy can support Kenya’s transition to a low-carbon economy. They urged more firms to adopt sustainable energy practices to enhance environmental conservation and energy security.
The solar project is expected to contribute to Kenya’s broader renewable energy agenda while reinforcing Unilever’s position as a leader in sustainable business practices.
